Montenegro is now a member of the Atlantic alliance, and perhaps the most advanced State of western Balkans on its path to accession to the European Union. It has been able to develop its regional roots and its trade with neighbouring States, at a time when its relations with Moscow are becoming increasingly difficult. Nevertheless, its national identity remains fragile. The economy faces real difficulties, and its strong political system does little to diminish internal disputes.
