Against all expectation the Essay on Exoticism and René Leys present strong structural similarities. Segalen positions an irony that indeed aims at the mean colonial civil servants, but which eventually turns against himself; this self-irony forbids him to clear himself from criticizing others. Comparing both texts tends thus to relativize the opposition established by the writer between “Vrais Exotes” and “Faux Explorateurs”.
